This player is designed only for playback of discs with Region Code 2, or for discs that do not contain Region Code information. If there is any other Region Code on a disc, that disc will not play on the DVD 30. 2 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Thank you for choosing the Harman Kardon DVD 30. The DVD 30 is a multipurpose DVD player, capable of playing both DVD-Audio and DVD-Video discs and conventional CD audio discs with the highest fidelity and access to future software upgrades via the Internet. [. . . ] It is particularly important for DVD-Audio, as correct outputs will ensure that you hear sound tracks with the proper directionality and intensity. NOTE: Listeners are often confused about the operation of the surround channels. While some assume that sound should always be coming from each speaker, most of the time there will be little or no sound in the surround channels. This is because they are only used when a movie director or sound mixer specifically places sound there to create ambiance, a special effect or to continue action from the front of the room to the rear. When the output levels are properly set it is normal for surround speakers to operate only occasionally. Artificially increasing the volume to the rear speakers may destroy the illusion of an enveloping sound field that duplicates the way you hear sound in a movie theater or concert hall. Before beginning the output level adjustment process, make certain that all speaker connections on your A/V Receiver have been properly made and that the 6 Channel direct outputs have been connected correctly to the 6 Channel Input of your A/V Receiver. For accurate calibration, it is a good idea to make these adjustments while seated in your favorite listening position. As the adjustment must be made for DVD-Audio (6 Ch Direct), you would need to select 6 Ch Direct on your A/V Receiver or Surround processor. Select the 6 Ch Direct Input associated with DVD-Audio on your A/V Receiver or Surround processor. Select OUTPUT LEVEL ADJUSTMENT with the ARROW (/¤ ) buttons, if it is not already selected, then press ARROW ( >) or ENTER to access the OUTPUT LEVEL ADJUSTMENT sub-menu. Activate the test tone by using the (>) and (¤ ) buttons and ENTER. Note: You can also adjust the level of all speakers without the Test Tone. When the front right is highlighted on the screen, you will hear the test tone move from the left front speaker to the front right speaker. Press the ( >) to move the cursor to the right column on the screen, and adjust the level of the front right by using the (/¤ ) buttons, until the level is equal to the level of the left front speaker. 6. Press the ( < ) and (¤ ) button to move to the CENTER, and continue to adjust the remaining individual speakers as described above. Note that the adjustments should be made with the (/¤ ) buttons on the remote control of the DVD 30 only, NOT with the main volume controls on your A/V Receiver. When all channels have the same output level, press ( < ) two times to go back to the player's AUDIO MENU. SYSTEM SETUP 21 System Setup Delay Settings Due the different distances between the listening position for the front channel speakers and the surround speakers, the amount of time it takes for sound to reach your ears from the front or surround speakers is different. You may compensate for this difference through the use of the delay settings to adjust the timing for the specific speaker placement and acoustic conditions in your listening room or home theater. The factory setting is appropriate for most rooms, but some installations create an uncommon distance between the front and surround speakers that may cause the arrival of front channel sounds to become disconnected from surround channel sounds. The DVD 30 also includes a separate setting for the center channel delay mode, since the discrete nature of these signals makes the location of the center channel speaker more critical. To calculate the delay for the center channel, measure the distance from the preferred listening position in the center of the room to both the center channel speaker and either the left or right speaker. [. . . ] Playback Control VCD discs made under the Revision 2. 0 specifi-cation will usually offer PBC playback control. Note that the PBC indicator in the front display will turn on automatically with any VCD, when the disc is played. PBC can be turned off/on in play mode by pressing the TITLE button on the remote control. When PBC is turned on, the disc will be played from the beginning, when PBC is turned off the disc will continue playing and the following message will appear on the screen: With PBC you can select Titles and navigate the disc as with DVD's.
